WHO ARE JOE AND CLARA ANYWAY?

Joseph Hubertus Pilates is the founder of the Pilates Method and Clara was his wife and training partner. They opened the first Pilates studio in Manhattan on 8th Avenue. Since then, Pilates has enjoyed a growing following around the world benefiting millions of people from all walks of life. Find out more. When you come in to the Club you will immerse yourself in world designed in homage to the founders.

WHAT IS PILATES?

Pilates is a powerful, dynamic method of movement and exercise developed by Joseph Pilates in the early 1900's. Originally called "Contrology", the method utilizes the mind's connection to the body in order to achieve overall strength and flexibility while creating a sense of physiological balance.

HOW OFTEN DO I NEED TO WORKOUT TO SEE RESULTS?

Joseph Pilates used to say "In ten sessions, you will feel the difference, in twenty you will see the difference, and in thirty you'll have a whole new body."

Realistically, achieving a whole new body in 30 sessions depends on the type and length of each session, the period over which the sessions are taken and of course, your individual body type. The good news is most people express that they feel taller, more elongated and invigorated after just one class.

To maximize results we recommend that you participate in at least 2 hours of Pilates a week. JOE & CLARA offers a wide range of classes both in length and intensity. In choosing your classes, make sure to listen to your body and always practice safely and consistently.

CAN I WORKOUT EVERYDAY?

The classes offered at JOE & CLARA are safe to practice every day. The fitness industry standard recommended for daily workouts is to mix up the intensity and duration to allow your body to recover. The class schedule makes it easy for you to do this. Remember that you do not have to experience a burn or feel sore to get a good workout. It is very common to over do it when you start the more intense programs. Often in our enthusiasm we forget to give the body time to recover. We also tend to forget how effective and worthwhile the fundamentals are. If you're like most, you'll find that some of your more extreme workouts will be the ones you go back to after you have been practicing for a while and your body has realigned and restored its balance. The best advice we can give is to not get bogged down with 'advancing too quickly' or 'chasing the burn.' Rather mix it up whenever you can. Remember that a muscle works regardless of the type of activity and if your muscles start to feel fatigued you actually need to give them a rest if you want to achieve real strength in your body. The objective is a lifestyle change rather than pain for short term gain.

PILATES LOOKS HARD, CAN I TRY IT WITHOUT ANY PRIOR EXPERIENCE?

Are you sitting down? If there's a back rest then try practicing Pilates breathing. When inhaling see how much of the back rest you can cover with your expanding ribs. When you exhale, empty all the air out of your lungs, ribs and keep exhaling until you've expelled the last drop of air from the depths of your tummy. Repeat a few more times. There, you've already learned the first principle and you haven't even come in yet. The wonderful thing about Pilates is that it is all about movement. Something we do even when we're sleeping. Once you start you'll be able to carry it over into your daily tasks and feel much better for it.

ISN'T PILATES JUST FOR FOR DANCERS/WOMEN?

Joseph Pilates was a boxer with a physique so grand that he literally posed for anatomy books. He originally developed his method as a way of rehabilitating soldiers during his time in an internment camp during World War I. After the war, he trained the Hamburg Police and was eventually asked to train the German Army. It is easy to see that the origin of this method is as masculine as they come. When Joseph decided to emigrate to the United states in the mid 1920's, he set up shop in a New York City building that housed various dance companies. Because the majority of his original clients were dancers. the method started to take on a feminine identity that still sticks to this day.

WHAT IS THE DISTINCTION BETWEEN A PILATES GROUP CLASS AND PRIVATE TRAINING?

In a class environment you will learn the technique and the technique will in turn teach your body. In a private session the instructor will use his/her knowledge of the technique and its modifications to teach for your specific body type. Both methods will restore healthy movement patterns. Typically, you'll feel and see faster results in a series of Private Training sessions. Joe once said that "In 10 sessions, you will feel the difference. In 20, you will see the difference. And in 30, you'll be on your way to having a whole new body."

WHAT IS PILATES INSPIRED?

The Pilates "Inspired" curriculum is rooted in the principles of the Method but is performed on more lightweight, portable apparatus that mimic the support and resistance of the traditional equipment. Motivated by Joe's constant quest to innovate we infused his Pilates Principles into many of today's latest fitness trends. From trampolines to Swiss Ball classes and many more, it's a great way to add diversity to your workout. For those new to Pilates these classes are ideal. You'll recognize a lot of the equipment but presented with a slightly different Pilates twist that will make it fresh again.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PILATES AND YOGA?

Origin The origins of Yoga date back to ancient India. Pilates was created in the early 20th Century. Joseph Pilates studied yoga and incorporated certain postures into his method.
Breathing Yogis fill the belly with air during inhalation. Pilates practitioners bypass the belly and fill the ribs with air during inhalation.
Equipment Yoga may utilize small props in order to assist the practitioner achieve postures, but it is mainly done with a mat. Pilates utilizes specialized equipment created by Joseph Pilates himself.
Stretching Yoga holds stretches. Pilates moves through the stretch.
Classes Yoga is often done in a group format. An instructor can lead by demonstration. A Pilates instructor teaches with verbal instruction and cues, gestures and gentle contact rather than demonstration.
Mind-Body-Spirit Both evoke a mind-body connection. Yoga is rooted in a spiritual energy. Pilates is a moving meditation capable of enhancing wellness.
Pricing Yoga can be relatively inexpensive because it can be done in a large group format and does not require costly equipment. Classical Pilates is equipment derived and while Mat Work classes have often been taught to large groups, it is not how Joseph Pilates intended it . At JOE & CLARA we offer small group classes so that our skilled instructors can provide a more personal level of service and attention. The Classical Studio is equipped with Peak PilatesĀ® equipment including six MVE® Towers, a Reformer/Tower combo, and six MVE® Chairs.

The Club
WHAT IS A "PILATES INSPIRED HEALTH CLUB?"

JOE & CLARA is unique. We developed two distinct small-group fitness programs that honor Classical Pilates as it was originally intended. Motivated by Joe's constant quest to innovate and appreciating that diversity is the spice of life we developed what we call Pilates Inspired programs incorporating many of today's latest fitness trends. We made sure to include an onsite Cardio Studio so our clients can easily add a metabolic boost to their daily routine. And finally, we understand that for various reasons some clients may have a preference for Private Training sessions and we are proud to be able to feature a space affectionately named after Joe and Clara's original studio in Manhattan, 8th Avenue Studio. Five distinct studios inspired by Pilates and located in one convenient location. Finally!

WHAT SHOULD I WEAR?

Make sure to wear comfortable workout clothing that allows you to move freely and comfortably. We suggest restricting jewelry that hangs and may get caught on the equipment. And ladies, please don't forget to tie your hair back for the same reason. For those who like to dial it up to a nice fat-burning sweat, bring a towel along. Whenever possible refrain from wearing heavily fragranced lotions, perfumes and body washes as some members may be allergic. Tread socks are suggested to ensure a good grip and avoid slippage. ToeSox are recommended and are available for purchase in the club. Tread socks are required for all Pilatesstick® Classes.

WHAT SHOULD I BRING?

Feel free to bring along drink or water bottles. Drinks are permitted throughout the studio in non-glass containers. Food on the other hand is not permitted in any of the workout areas. Loud music is not generally played but feel free to use an mp3 device attached to ear buds in the Cardio Studio.

CAN I STORE MY STUFF?

While we cannot be responsible for lost or stolen items, we have provided onsite storage for your personal belongings. Please make sure to silence your mobile phone on the way in and leave your cares behind.
