Pilates for Breast Cancer

Eve Gentry

The Pilates method has a deep rooted history with breast cancer ever since Joseph himself helped rehabilitate one of his students, Eve Gentry. Eve (pictured right) was a dancer who worked with Joe as one of his many assistants. In 1956, she was diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent a radical mastectomy. At the time, doctors believed that she would not be able to ever fully recover. They told her that she would lose function and her ability to perform certain movements.

Through his method Joseph was able to restore her range of motion in ways that amazed even the doctors. In fact, the doctors thought the films of her workouts were altered. In response, Joseph re-shot them with her topless.

Eve went on to continue spreading the rehabilitative work of Joseph and to this day a lot of the pre-Pilates or foundational work can be attributed to her.

The overall benefits of Pilates are well known:

Healing with Pilates

Joe & Clara launched "Pink Pilates" in October of 2012 as a six-week series designed to help those dealing with the effects of breast cancer treatment, including surgery, regain strength and range of motion through classical Pilates. It is held in conjunction with the Cancer Support Community and recently completed its third series.

What started as a six week program has grown to a twelve week program in the Fall of 2013. Fifteen women went through the original three cycles and here's what they had to say:

"Just wanted to send a note of appreciation and thanks for my time in the Pink Pilates program. Romina and Stacey thank you!! You ladies have a beautiful club, I felt like I was at a spa! But mostly the nurturing and genuine care that you ladies showed to our group made me look forward to coming to class every week. The Pink Pilates program was amazing. Both of you evaluated each of our specific needs and limitations and tailored the exercises so each of us could achieve our own level of success. Again, thank you for showing me another way to fitness and vitality!" – Debbie S.

"The Pink Pilates program was such a wonderful and unique experience. I learned so much about the philosophy and principals as well as having the opportunity to explore the equipment and exercises at a 'training wheels' pace in a very supportive environment. When I joined the regular curriculum I was nervous at first, but the wonderful staff was right there every inch of the way to help me adjust. Plus all that I had learned in Pink Pilates, it has been a positive transition. - Joanne S.
